Day 1 update- we are finally back at a place with internet service!

Further info on Day 1 as promised.... We spent the night last night in Grand Canyon and didn't have wifi or even cell service, so very sorry this took so long!

When we got to our destination for the day we charged up to almost full so our miles charged does not exactly match our miles driven (this will be the case most days). I am figuring gas costs based on miles charged to have an accurate comparison of costs, because this is how the electricity costs are calculated.

16+ hours on the road for day 1
total miles driven = 758
total miles charged = 885 (bc we charged to full overnight).
cost of gas: $68.96 assuming 25 mpg
cost of electricity: zero (I have 1000 miles of free supercharging I got as a referral bonus-the credit goes to the buyer as well so if you buy a Tesla use my code at the bottom of every post!)
Savings: $68.96

We drove most of the day, stopping to supercharge (eating and bathroom breaks all at SC stops)

A couple things I forgot to mention in the day 1 blog:

We discovered there was an earthquake in Oklahoma (over 4.0 so not small) that we missed by only a few hours. Whew!

Here are the pics from "camp mode" in Tucumcari and the Continental Oil Company. My sister didn't want her picture on the blog so I had to edit that photo.  The other Model 3 that spent the night here is Greg- he turned out to be a travel buddy for a bit, as we saw him at a couple of stops that first 2 days. Hi Greg, hope you got home safe!

Day 3- Grand Canyon and Vegas hotel

Today we woke up at the Grand Canyon destination charger with a full charge and a serious need for a bathroom. We drove to the main lodge to take care of business, then to a campground to eat breakfast at a picnic table. We packed instant oatmeal to have for breakfast so it would be quick and easy (and enough bottled water to drink AND make breakfast). We have been doing PBJ sandwiches and chips for lunch each day since we are on the road and eating at superchargers. It's been quick and easy to do the trip this way because the cooler fits nicely behind the passenger seat for easy access. Here are some views of the Grand Canyon for you to enjoy, we drove around the south rim (~50 miles of driving in the park) before heading out to Vegas. I did all the driving today, but Vanessa did take over for about 25 miles in the GC so I could check out the views. Thanks Ness!   Shout out to the Grand Hotel in Tusayan, AZ- they have ~12 superchargers, and at least 6 destination charge

Final numbers

Our final numbers for this trip are below. We laughed a lot, had a few issues with traffic/weather (to be expected on any road trip), camped in the car, stayed in a 5 star hotel, ate at a Michelin star restaurant, hiked up TWO volcanoes, went into an ice cave, explored the Grand Canyon, saw the Milky Way, got up close and personal with a deer, elk, coyote, and antelope (oh and a cute little chipmunk that was running around one of the stops too), saw a bird hovering midair, fought off tumbleweeds, saw a bunch of cool historical sites including the Oregon Trail, saw the sunrise over the salt flats and walked around on them, drove through the mountains and the desert, hiked around lava fields, saw some pretty waterfalls, and spent quality time together for a week. Whew! (did I forget anything I feel like I forgot something. LOL) What an amazing trip! Final numbers: 12 states 8 days 7 nights 4 nights car camping 3 nights in hotels 2 sisters 1 car Total miles driven:  4333 Total

Day 6- Volcano & camping in the mountains

We woke up this morning around 930, went downstairs for a real breakfast (we have been having instant oatmeal most days bc it’s quick and easy in the car), and went back to the SC to top off our charge to 100% so we would for sure have enough power to get from Twin Falls to Craters of the Moon (COTM), drive around, leave climate control on when we got out to walk around, and still make it to Idaho Falls to charge again. We left with about 300 miles (so not totally full but close enough) and we got to Idaho Falls no problem. We again could have probably left at 85ish% and been ok, but we weren’t sure what the weather would be like and how much time we would spend at the volcano, so better safe than sorry. My sister took the first driving shift again because it looked to be mostly alongside the mountains, rather than over or through them.
